The package includes accommodations at Kanuga and breakfast for up to two guests.Īffiliated with the Episcopal Church since 1928, Kanuga is a 1,400-acre conference, retreat and camp center near Hendersonville. 18-20, the package coincides with the Dirty Dancing Festival in Lake Lure. To celebrate the movie, Kanuga is offering a limited-time Dirty Dancing package. “Especially when they learn that while the movie is fictional, you can have a vacation similar to what the people in the movie were having." "We think more people will learn that Kanuga exists and maybe becom3 interested in becoming guests,” Hartley said. Similar to how the original 1987 film brought people to Lake Lure - which served as the backdrop for several scenes in the original movie - Kanuga officials believe they will see an uptick in those interested in becoming guests. “But it did take a fair amount of logistics." ![]() "We had some really gracious folks on campus that it worked out,” Hartley said. Lionsgate often invited Kanuga employees to catered lunch with the actors and crew. ![]() Luckily both the guests and the production company were gracious during the process. “They were able to accomplish that by filming at night." “Sometimes they wanted to film at two in the morning with really bright light so they could somehow manipulate that scene to look either like daylight or nighttime,” said Harley. Hartley said coexisting with the production crew was interesting, especially with guests staying at the cottages as filming was going on. But their goal was to leave things better than they even found them. "They really transformed some buildings into something that didn't look like it was,” said Hartley. A week later they returned everything back. They did everything from painting the waterfront pavilion to renovating a building at Camp Kanuga with new siding, doorways and walls. A team of carpenters and set crew came in for a week to transform buildings around campus into exactly what they envisioned. The crew filmed for about five weeks at Kanuga. Our buildings, the natural beauty here - it was just a perfect fit for the movie." “But as they started mapping out the scenes that they would need, they started adding Kanuga more and more because they said our setting was just so perfect. "Our initial understanding was that Lionsgate was going to film just a small portion of the movie here,” said Hartley. While scenes were shot across Western North Carolina, they ended up filming half of the movie at Kanuga. The production team and crew based themselves in Hendersonville during filming. The project didn’t move forward at that point, but in 2014 another location scout looked at Kanuga and recommended it to the production company. Leslie Hartley, director of marketing and communications for Kanuga, said a scout came to the area four years ago interested in using Kanuga as a setting for the film. Most of the scenes shot at Kanuga were interior shots in the cabins, but outdoor settings at Camp Kanuga and the waterfront pavilion on Kanuga Lake will also be seen in the film. The scenes at Johnny’s cabin were filmed at Camp Kanuga’s Fox Pavilion, while the Fox Cottage on the main campus was repurposed as the Kellermans' cabin. Several iconic scenes were filmed at Kanuga, including the conga line at the beginning of the movie and Baby’s famous watermelon scene. She falls in love with the camp’s dance instructor, Johnny Castle. The movie revisits the classic story of Frances “Baby” Houseman, who is spending the summer at a Catskills resort with her family. “While the movie is a fictional story, Kanuga is a place where people can truly experience a vacation filled with old-fashioned fun and relaxation.” “We hope the movie provides a chance for viewers to fall in love again with Western North Carolina’s beauty,” says Michael R. About half of the movie was filmed at the Kanuga Conference Center retreat near Hendersonville last spring. on the ABC Television Network, Lionsgate Television’s new 3-hour musical event will air.
